EU Citizens

If you’re an EU citizen, you enjoy borderless travel within the Schengen Area, which includes Spain. For longer stays over three months, you should register as a resident. Spending more than 183 days annually? You’ll need to declare your tax residency in Spain.

Swiss and EEA Citizens

Citizens of Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Iceland share the same free movement rights as EU citizens, allowing seamless travel and relocation to Spain.

British Citizens

After Brexit, British nationals are considered non-EU citizens. You can stay in Spain for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa. For permanent residence, the most popular options include the Non-Lucrative Visa or the Golden Visa, both requiring specific financial conditions. If you were a resident before Brexit, you retain the same rights but must have applied for residency before 2020.

Non-EU Citizens

For non-EU citizens, the 90/180-day rule applies, with some nationalities requiring a Schengen Visa even to visit. Residency options are similar to those available to British nationals, including the Non-Lucrative Visa, Golden Visa, or other types of work and student visas.
