The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the unique ID foreigners use in Spain to buy property, open a bank account and sign contracts. The NIE is a personal, unique and sequential identification number for foreigners in Spain. It is not a residence card. Bring a completed EX‑15 application, your original passport (or EU ID card) with a copy of the data page, proof of the reason (la solicitud con “compra de vivienda”, “trabajo”, etc.), and proof of payment of tasa 790, código 012. EU/EEA citizens submit EX‑15 with a passport or national ID card. Non‑EU citizens use a passport and must be in a legal situation if applying in Spain (for example, entry stamp or visa). The assignment criteria are the same: prove a concrete economic, professional or social interest (compra de vivienda, contrato de trabajo, estudios, certificado de no residente).
